Der Monarchfalter (oder Danaus plexippus) ist ein in vielen Gebieten weltweit zu findender, jedoch am häufigsten in Nord- und Südamerika verbreiteter Schmetterling. Er hat eine Flügelspannweite von 8,9 bis 10,2 Zentimetern und wiegt ungefähr 0,5 Gramm. Seine Flügel sind orangerot mit auffälligen schwarzen Streifen und dicken schwarzen Rändern, die mit weißen Flecken versehen sind. Seine Beine und Fühler sind schwarz, der Körper ist schwarz und mit weißen Punkten versehen. Die Raupen des Monarchfalters haben einen dicken Körper mit gelben, schwarzen und weißen Streifen.
