Bonobo's (of Pan paniscus) leven in de bossen en regenwouden van de Democratische Republiek Congo. Ze zijn het nauwst verwant aan de chimpansee (of Pan troglodytes). Van alle soorten in de natuur hebben deze twee soorten apen de meeste overeenkomsten in DNA met de mens.<br><br>Bonobo's hebben roze lippen en donkere, naar voren gerichte ogen. Ze hebben kleine oren, een platte neus met brede neusgaten en zwart haar. Mannelijke bonobo's zijn groter dan de vrouwtjes. Ze zijn gemiddeld 73 tot 83 cm lang en wegen 39 kg tegenover 70 tot 76 cm lang en 31 kg voor de vrouwtjes.
