De Californische zeeleeuw is een oorrobbensoort die voorkomt aan de westkust van de Verenigde Staten en Mexico. Deze zeeleeuw is doorgaans donkerbruin met lichtere kleuren aan de flanken en op de buik. Sommige vrouwtjes zijn lichtbruin. De jongen verschillen van uiterlijk en hebben een bleekbruine, donzige vacht die ze ruilen voor hun volwassen vacht zodra ze tussen de 5-7 maanden oud zijn. Mannetjes worden 2,25 tot 2,5 m lang en wegen 250 tot 350 kg. De aanzienlijk kleinere vrouwtjes worden zo'n 1,8 tot 2,1 m lang en wegen tussen de 80 en 100 kg.
