Il varano d'acqua asiatico (o Varanus salvator) è un grande rettile nativo di foreste pluviali, paludi e foreste di mangrovie di gran parte delle zone più calde del Sudest asiatico e del subcontinente indiano. Il suo colore va dal verde scuro al nero, con segni reticolati marrone chiaro e gialli su tutto il corpo che spesso appaiono come fasce sulla coda. I maschi di varano d'acqua asiatico sono più grandi rispetto alle femmine; sono lunghi tra 1,5 e 2 metri e pesano tra 5 e 50 chili con una media di 20 chili, mentre le femmine sono lunghe tra 1,2 e 1,8 metri e pesano tra 2 e 22 chili.
