La lontra gigante è un grande mammifero semi-aquatico che vive nel bacino fluviale amazzonico e nelle paludi del Pantanal in Sud America. La lontra gigante ha una pelliccia marrone spessa e vellutata con caratteristici segni bianchi attorno alla gola. Ha grandi zampe palmate e una lunga coda, perfetta per nuotare. I maschi e le femmine non differiscono nelle dimensioni e solitamente misurano tra 150 e 180 centimetri, ma differiscono nel peso. I maschi pesano tra 26 e 32 chili, mentre le femmine sono leggermente più leggere, tra i 22 e i 26 chili.
