Die Echte Achatschnecke (Achatina achatina) ist eine große Schneckenart, die in den Wäldern Westafrikas (unter anderem in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Elfenbeinküste, Ghana und Nigeria) beheimatet ist. Ihr Körper ist grau und das konische Gehäuse ist gelb, orange oder braun mit schwarzen Streifen. Achatschnecken sind Zwitter und sie besitzen sowohl männliche als auch weibliche Fortpflanzungsorgane, deshalb kann man nicht wirklich zwischen "Weibchen" und "Männchen" unterscheiden. Allerdings haben sich die Fortpflanzungsorgane von kleinen oder fast ausgewachsenen Exemplaren noch nicht entwickelt. Sie können deshalb als "Männchen" angesehen werden.
