Der Schwalbenschwanz (oder Papilio machaon) ist ein in gemäßigten Regionen, Waldlandschaften und sogar Tundren Europas, Asiens und Nordamerikas lebender Schmetterling. Er hat blassgelbe Flügel mit grauschwarzem Mustern auf den Vorderflügeln und blauschwarze Akzente sowie rote Augenflecken auf den Hinterflügeln. Diese verfügen außerdem über einen längeren "Schwanz", der den Tieren ihren Namen gibt. Es gibt keinen sexuellen Dimorphismus hinsichtlich Größe und Aussehen und die durchschnittliche Flügelspannweite beträgt 6,5 bis 8,6 Zentimeter. Die Raupe des Schwalbenschwanzes ist dick und blassgrün mit schwarzen und orangen Zeichnungen auf jedem Körpersegment.
