De monarchvlinder (of Danaus plexippus) is een vlinder die wereldwijd veel voorkomt, maar die het meest gezien wordt in Noord- en Zuid-Amerika. Monarchvlinders hebben een spanwijdte van 8,9 tot 10,2 cm en wegen ongeveer 0,5 gram. De vleugels zijn oranjerood met duidelijke zwarte lijnen en dikke zwarte randen met witte stippen. De poten en voelsprieten zijn zwart en het lichaam is zwart met witte stippen. De rups van de monarchvlinder heeft een gedrongen lijf met gele, zwarte en witte strepen.
