De dagpauwoog (of Aglais io) is een vlindersoort die voorkomt in de gematigde graslanden en bossen van Europa en Azië. De vlinder heeft vier rode vleugels met bruine randen en opvallende oogvlekken. De oogvlekken kunnen bestaan uit gele, blauwe, rode en paarse tinten, en zijn zwart omrand. De onderkant van de vleugels is bruin tot zwart. De mannetjes en vrouwtjes zien er hetzelfde uit, maar de vrouwtjes kunnen tot wel 10% groter zijn. Dagpauwogen hebben een spanwijdte van 5 tot 6,4 cm. De rups van de dagpauwoog is zwart en harig, en de cocons zijn groen met stekelige randen op de rug.
