Het nijlpaard (of Hippopotamus amphibius) is een groot zoogdier dat voorkomt in de rivieren ten zuiden van de Sahara. De in het water levende dieren hebben lange, vooruitstekende tanden, neusgaten boven op de snuit, kleine oren en een dikke grijs-bruine huid. Mannetjes zijn 4 tot 5 m lang en wegen tussen de 1500 en 2000 kg. Vrouwtjes zijn tussen de 3,3 en 4,2 m lang en wegen tussen de 1000 en 1500 kg.
