De zwartvoetpinguïn is een niet-vliegende vogel die voorkomt aan de kust en op de eilanden van Zuid-Afrika en Namibië. De zwartvoetpinguïn heeft een zwarte rug en zwemvliezen, zwarte poten en een zwart 'gezichtsmasker' met een witte rand. De torso is wit met een zwarte band over de bovenkant van de borst. De ogen van de zwartvoetpinguïn zijn omgeven door roze stukken die een rol spelen bij thermoregulatie. Elke pinguïn heeft een uniek patroon van zwarte stippen op de borst. Zwartvoetpinguïns zijn 60 tot 68 cm lang en wegen ongeveer 2,2 tot 3,5 kg. De mannetjes zijn iets groter dan de vrouwtjes en hebben een langere snavel.

African penguins cannot hunt while moulting as their feathers are not yet waterproof, so they fast until their plumage has fully grown in. Moulting takes 3 weeks and penguins lose 50% of their bodyweight in this time.
African penguins are preyed upon by sharks and fur seals in the ocean and kelp gulls, mongoose, cape genets and domestic cats and dogs on land.
