De noordelijke diamantrugschildpad is een kleine schildpadsoort die in de brakke moerassen en kustmoerassen van de oostelijke en zuidelijke Verenigde Staten voorkomt. Hij wordt gekenmerkt door een opvallend schildpatroon van aaneengesloten 'diamanten' met meestal concentrische lichte en donkere ringen. Het patroon en de kleur kan per soort variëren. De gemiddelde lengte van het schild van het mannetje is 13 cm, die van het vrouwtje 17 cm.
