ミズオオトカゲ (Varanus salvator) は、東南アジアやインド亜大陸の温暖な地域の熱帯雨林や湿地帯、マングローブ林に生息する大型の爬虫類である。体色は濃い緑から黒で、全身に淡い茶色と黄色の網目状の模様がある。この網目は、尾に帯状に見られることも多い。性的二型であり、オスのほうが体が大きい。オスが体長 1.5 m ～ 2 m、体重 5 kg ～ 50 kg、平均 20 kg であるのに対し、メスは体長 1.2 m ～ 1.8 m、体重 2 kg ～ 22 kg である。
