アメリカアリゲーターは、アメリカ南部とメキシコの河川、沼地、湿地に生息する大型のワニの一種である。体色は、ダークグリーン、ブラウン、グレーのいずれかである。頭部は丸みを帯び、開口部が大きく、多くの歯があり、その一部が外に突き出ている。体は幅広く、背中には鱗の隆起がいくつも見られる。横に張り出した脚で地面すれすれを移動するが、走るときには地面から体を持ち上げる。オスは体長 3.4 ～ 4.6 m、体重 200 ～ 626 kg。メスは体長 2.6 ～ 3.0 m、体重 30 ～ 200 kg である。アメリカアリゲーターは一生を通じて成長が止まらないため、非常に大きなサイズになる。
