コビトカイマンは、南アメリカ北部の森林の川や沼地に生息する小型のワニである。この種は成獣になるにつれて外見が変化していく。大きな茶色の目 (黄色の場合もあり) をしている。オスの平均体長は 1.3 ～ 1.5 mであるのに対し、メスは平均 1.15 mである。平均的な体重は 6 ～ 7 kgである。
