Il gorilla di pianura occidentale (o Gorilla gorilla gorilla) è originario di Camerun, Guinea Equatoriale, Gabon, Repubblica del Congo e Niger meridionale. Vive nelle foreste pluviali, nelle paludi e nei terreni agricoli abbandonati. Ha la pelle nera, occhi scuri, una arcata sopraccigliare marcata, grandi narici e pelo che copre quasi tutto il corpo tranne faccia, orecchie, mani e piedi. Il maschio è molto più grande della femmina e, con l'avanzare dell'età, il pelo sulla schiena diventa grigio e vengono chiamati "silverback". I gorilla vivono in piccoli gruppi con un silverback che guida le femmine, i maschi giovani e i cuccioli.
