Originario degli Stati Uniti del nord e del Canada, l'orso grizzly è una sottospecie dell'orso bruno (o Ursus arctos horribilis). Il grizzly si riconosce dalla pelliccia marrone e folta, dalle spalle larghe e dal muso dritto con orecchie arrotondate. Ha poderose zampe frontali con lunghi artigli che usa per scavare e cacciare. Può raggiungere dimensioni imponenti, ma variabili in base alle diverse popolazioni. In media, un maschio pesa circa 240 chili per 2,2 metri di lunghezza, mentre una femmina 160 chili per 1,8 metri.
