Il ragno delle banane (o Phoneutria nigriventer) è una specie di aracnide originario del Sud America, vive principalmente nelle foreste pluviali ma si trova spesso anche nei centri urbani. Questo ragno è grande, velenoso e di colore chiaro, con peli sul corpo e striature nere sulle zampe. Il maschio è leggermente più piccolo della femmina, ha un addome molto più piccolo e dei bulbi rigonfi all'estremità dei palpi, appendici che si trovano vicino alla bocca, che aiutano a stabilirne il sesso. Le zampe sono lunghe tra i 130 e i 150 millimetri e il corpo è grande 17x48 millimetri. Un comportamento classico del ragno delle banane è la posizione difensiva in cui alza le due paia di zampe anteriori ondeggiando da un lato all'altro.
