L'occhio di pavone (o Aglais io) è una specie di farfalla che vive nelle pianure e nei boschi temperati di Europa e Asia. Ha quattro ali rosse con bordi marroni e caratteristiche macchie a forma di occhio. Questi "occhi" possono essere gialli, blu, rossi o viola e avere dei segni neri attorno. Il lato inferiore delle ali va dal marrone al nero. I maschi e le femmine sono simili, anche se le femmine possono essere fino al 10% più grandi dei maschi. L'occhio di pavone ha un'apertura alare che va dai 5 ai 6,4 centimetri. I bruchi sono neri e pelosi, mentre le crisalidi sono verdi con bordi crestati sul lato dorsale.
