Lo gnu comune (o Connochaetes taurinus) è una grande antilope originaria dell'Africa meridionale. È anche conosciuto come gnu dalla barba bianca, gnu blu o gnu striato. Ha il manto grigio chiaro o marrone con strisce scure su collo, spalle e petto, una lunga coda nera e una fluente criniera dello stesso colore che può stare ritta o ricadere sul collo a seconda della sottospecie. La barba sotto il collo è bianca. Questa specie presenta dimorfismo sessuale: i maschi sono più grandi delle femmine, ma entrambi hanno le caratteristiche corna a forma di L. I maschi sono alti al garrese tra 1,23 e 1,65 metri, lunghi tra 1,7 e 2,4 metri e pesano tra 165 e 290 chili. Le femmine, invece, sono alte al garrese tra 1,14 e 1,42 metri, sono lunghe tra 1,75 e 2,15 metri e pesano tra 140 e 260 chili.

Blue wildebeest are known to migrate over 1000 miles every year and cross 2 rivers to do so.
Up to 90% of blue wildebeest offspring are all born within a 2 week birthing period.
Blue wildebeest are often seen in herds with plains zebra. The two species don’t compete for food though because zebras prefer long grass and wildebeest can then graze on the shorter grasses.
