La moffetta comune (o Mephitis mephitis) è un piccolo mammifero diffuso in tutto il Nord America, Canada meridionale, Stati Uniti e Messico settentrionale compresi. È un animale tozzo con zampe posteriori corte, corporatura robusta e una coda folta. Il muso stretto ha il naso a punta e piccole orecchie tonde. La moffetta comune ha una pelliccia folta e ispida nera e bianca con una caratteristica striscia bianca che parte dalla testa, si divide in due e arriva fino alla coda. I maschi sono lunghi tra 38 e 46 centimetri, con una coda tra 33 e 41 centimetri, e pesano tra 2 e 5,5 chili. Le femmine sono leggermente più piccole, con una lunghezza tra 34 e 41 centimetri, la coda lunga tra 30 e 37 centimetri e un peso che si attesta tra 1,8 e 4,9 chili.
