La rana toro è un grande anfibio presente nelle paludi, negli stagni e nei laghi di Stati Uniti e Canada. A seconda dell'ambiente in cui vive può avere il dorso verde scuro, verde chiaro o marrone chiaro, mentre il ventre è sempre più chiaro. Alcune varietà hanno delle macchie più scure sulla schiena e un motivo a strisce sulle zampe, mentre altre ne sono prive. La rana toro è sessualmente dimorfica: le femmine sono più grandi dei maschi, che hanno una caratteristica colorazione gialla sulla gola e una membrana timpanica (ghiandola uditiva) molto più sviluppata ai lati della testa. La rana toro è grande tra 90 e 152 millimetri e pesa tra 300 e 500 grammi.
