Il cane della prateria dalla coda nera è un roditore che vive nelle praterie, le pianure, le aree semidesertiche e le steppe degli Stati Uniti e di una piccola parte di Canada e Messico. Ha una pelliccia color sabbia più chiara sul ventre, lunghi artigli, orecchie piccole, occhi neri e una coda con la punta nera. I maschi sono leggermente più grandi delle femmine, ma per il resto hanno un aspetto molto simile. Il cane della prateria dalla coda nera pesa tra 0,68 e 1,36 chili, è lungo tra 36 e 43 centimetri esclusa la coda, che a sua volta è lunga tra 7,6 e 10,2 centimetri.
