Il puma è un grande felino che vive nelle foreste, le montagne, le praterie, i deserti e la macchia di Canada, Stati Uniti, Messico e Sud America. È conosciuto anche come coguaro o leone di montagna. Ha il manto color sabbia, zampe possenti, una coda spessa, la testa grande con orecchie arrotondate, il muso bianco e segni scuri a forma di lacrime che scendono dagli occhi. I maschi sono lunghi tra 120 e 200 centimetri, coda esclusa, sono alti al garrese tra 60 e 90 centimetri, hanno la coda lunga tra 63 e 95 centimetri e pesano tra 53 e 100 chili. Le femmine sono lunghe tra 90 e 180 centimetri, coda esclusa, e pesano tra 29 e 64 chili, mentre la lunghezza della coda a l'altezza sono simili a quelle dei maschi.
