L'orso del sole è una specie che vive nelle foreste pluviali tropicali del sud-est asiatico. Ha la pelliccia di color marrone scuro, viso e muso marrone chiaro e una caratteristica mezzaluna arancione sulla parte alta del petto. La testa è larga, con muso oblungo e orecchie piccole e arrotondate. I maschi e le femmine hanno un aspetto simile, ma i maschi sono più grandi delle femmine di circa il 10-20%. Sono lunghi tra i 120 e i 150 centimetri e pesano tra i 27 e i 65 chili.
