Il canguro rosso (o Macropus rufus) è un grande mammifero marsupiale che vive in tutta l'Australia, tranne che nelle regioni costiere e nella foresta pluviale. Ha grandi zampe posteriori a forma di L e zampe anteriori piccole, grandi orecchie come quelle del coniglio e un muso lungo e smussato. Si tratta di una specie sessualmente dimorfica: i maschi sono diversi dalle femmine. I maschi sono molto più grandi delle femmine e sono alti tra 1,3 e 1,6 metri con una coda lunga circa 1,3 metri e un peso compreso tra 55 e 90 chili; le femmine raggiungono un'altezza compresa tra 0,85 e 1,05 metri e pesano tra 18 e 40 chili. I maschi hanno una pelliccia rossa e il ventre chiaro, zampe anteriori, posteriori e petto muscolosi; le femmine hanno la pelliccia grigia e muscoli non molto sviluppati.
