Der Bindenwaran (oder Varanus salvator) ist ein in den Regenwäldern, Sümpfen und Mangrowenwäldern in einem Großteil der wärmeren Gebiete Südostasiens und des indischen Subkontinents beheimatetes großes Reptil. Es hat eine dunkelgrüne bis schwarze Farbe mit blassbraunen und gelben netzartigen Flecken am gesamten Körper. Diese Strukturen erscheinen oft als Streifen am Schwanz. Der Bindenwaran ist sexuell dimorph, wobei Männchen größer sind. Männliche Bindenwarane sind 1,5 bis 2 Meter lang und wiegen zwischen 5 und 50, durchschnittlich aber 20 Kilogramm. Weibchen haben eine Länge von 1,2 bis 1,8 Metern und wiegen zwischen 2 und 22 Kilogramm.
