Der Puma ist eine große Katze und lebt in den Wäldern, Bergen, Wüsten und in den Gras- und Buschlandschaften der USA, Kanadas, Mexikos und Südamerikas. Er wird auch Silberlöwe, Berglöwe oder Kuguar genannt. Sein Fell ist sandfarben, er hat starke Beine und einen dicken Schwanz, einen breiten Schädel mit abgerundeten Ohren, eine weiße Schnauze und dunkle Linien, die von den Augen wegführen. Männliche Pumas weisen eine Kopf-Rumpf-Länge von 120 bis 200 Zentimetern, eine Schulterhöhe von 60 bis 90 Zentimetern, eine Schwanzlänge von 63 bis 95 Zentimetern und ein Gewicht von 53 bis 100 Kilogramm auf. Weibchen sind mit einer Kopf-Rumpf-Länge von 90 bis 180 Zentimetern und einem Gewicht von 29 bis 64 Kilogramm etwas kleiner, sie sind jedoch in etwa gleich hoch und ihr Schwanz ist ebenfalls ungefähr gleich lang wie der eines Männchens.
