Der Kalifornische Seelöwe gehört zu den Ohrenrobben und ist in den Küstenregionen der westlichen USA und Mexikos heimisch. Dieser Seelöwe ist in der Regel dunkelbraun mit helleren Seiten und Bauch, obwohl einige Kühe ein blassbraunes Fell haben. Jungtiere sehen anders aus: Sie haben ein hellbraunes, flauschiges Jungtierfell, das sie im Alter von fünf bis sieben Monaten gegen das Erwachsenenfell austauschen. Männliche Kalifornische Seelöwen sind 2,25 bis 2,5 Meter lang und wiegen 250 bis 350 Kilogramm. Die Weibchen sind mit 1,8 bis 2,1 Meter Länge und einem Gewicht von 80 bis 100 Kilogramm wesentlich kleiner.
