Das Breitmaulnashorn ist ein großer Vertreter aus der Familie der Nashörner, der im Süden Afrikas (Südafrika, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Kenia, Uganda, Sambia) heimisch ist. Die Tiere sind kräftig gebaut und haben dicke, graue Haut. Das Breitmaulnashorn besitzt zwei Hörner, wobei das vordere Horn deutlich größer und länger ist als das andere. Der Kopf ist nahezu rechteckig, die Schnauze ist ausgesprochen breit. Die Ohren stehen oben vom Kopf ab, am unteren Halsansatz befindet sich ein "Höcker" aus Muskeln, die den Kopf stützen. Die Männchen werden 3,7 bis 4 Meter lang und erreichen eine Höhe von 170 bis 188 Zentimetern. Im Schnitt wiegen sie 2.300 Kilogramm. Weibchen werden zwischen 3,4 und 3,65 Meter lang, zwischen 160 und 177 Zentimeter groß und wiegen etwa 1700 Kilogramm.
