De zuidelijke witte neushoorn is een groot hoefdier dat oorspronkelijk uit zuidelijk Afrika komt (Zuid-Afrika, Namibië, Zimbabwe, Kenia, Oeganda, Zambia). Het is een groot, breed dier met een dikke, grijze huid. De zuidelijke witte neushoorn heeft twee hoorns en de voorste hoorn is veel groter dan de achterste. De kop van de neushoorn is bijna rechthoekig van vorm, met een vierkante snuit. De oren staan boven op de kop en steken uit, en onderaan de nek zit een bult die bestaat uit spieren die de kop ondersteunen. Het mannetje van de zuidelijke witte neushoorn is tussen de 3,7 en 4 m lang, 170 tot 188 cm hoog en weegt ongeveer 2300 kg. Het vrouwtje is 3,4 tot 3,65 m lang, 160 tot 177 cm hoog en weegt gemiddeld 1700 kg.
