아홀로틀(Ambystoma mexicanum)은 멕시코의 민물 호수에서만 발견되는 양서류로, 현재 소치밀코 호수만이 유일하게 남은 자연 서식지입니다. 야생의 아홀로틀은 녹색과 갈색을 띠며 몸 전체에 작고 어두운 반점이 있습니다. 하지만 애완동물 거래에 사용되는 아홀로틀은 색소가 부족해 흰색을 띠거나 다른 다양한 색상을 띠기도 합니다. 아홀로틀은 목에 도롱뇽 유체에서 일반적으로 볼 수 있는 돌출된 아가미가 있으며, 얼굴은 넓고 작은 눈과 큰 입을 가지고 있습니다. 또한 길이는 15~45cm이고, 평균 몸무게는 300g입니다.
