황소개구리는 미국과 캐나다의 늪과 연못, 호수에 서식하는 대형 양서류입니다. 황소개구리의 등은 서식하는 환경에 따라 짙은 녹색, 옅은 녹색, 또는 옅은 갈색을 띠며 배 부분은 더 옅은 색을 띱니다. 등 부분에 어두운 반점이 있거나 다리에 띠를 두른 듯한 무늬가 있는 경우도 있지만, 아무런 무늬가 없는 경우도 있습니다. 황소개구리는 암컷과 수컷의 모습이 완전히 다릅니다. 암컷은 수컷보다 몸집이 크고, 수컷의 목구멍은 독특한 노란색을 띠며 머리 양옆에 있는 고막(둥근 청각 기관)의 크기가 훨씬 큽니다. 황소개구리는 길이가 90~152cm이고 몸무게는 300~500g입니다.
