ニシローランドゴリラ (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) は、カメルーン、赤道ギニア、ガボン、コンゴ共和国、ナイジェリア南部に生息し、熱帯雨林、沼地の森林、放棄された農地で暮らし、餌を探す。黒い肌、正面を向いた黒い目、目立つ眉弓、大きな鼻孔、および、顔、耳、手、足を除き、体の大部分がゴワゴワした毛で覆われている。オスは、メスよりはるかに大きく、成長すると背中の毛が灰色になり、「シルバーバック」と呼ばれる。ゴリラは、シルバーバックを中心に、メス、若いオス、子で構成される小規模の群れを作って生活する。
