パフアダー (Bitis arietans) は、サハラ以南のアフリカと中東南部に広く分布する毒蛇である。ずんぐりした身体と幅の広い頭部、そしてベージュ、茶色、黒などくすんだ色の鱗が特徴である。鱗は網目状に配置されており、好んで暮らすサバンナや草原で格好のカモフラージュになる。動きはゆっくりだが、動揺するとすごい速さで動くこともできる。平均全長は 1 m だが、個体によっては 2 m 近くに到達するものもいる。オスはメスより大きい傾向にあり、胴回りが太く尻尾も長い。
