西アフリカ、中央アフリカの川、湖、沼地が原産のアカカワイノシシ (Potamochoerus porcus) は、ブタ科の小型動物である。全身に赤い毛が生え、顔、足、尾、耳は黒いのが特徴である。耳には黒と白の長い毛がある。背中には、白い毛がライン状に生えている。顔や耳の周りには白い毛がみられる。性的二形が見られ、オスはメスよりも体が大きく、体重もあり、頭蓋骨も大きく鼻に円錐状のこぶがあり、顔に沿った長いひげがある。頭胴長 100 cm ～ 150 cm、肩高 50 cm ～ 80 cm、体重 45 kg ～ 115 kg である。
