ニホンザル (Macaca fuscata) は、日本列島固有の猿の一種である。日本北部の亜寒帯林など、様々な環境条件で暮らすため、欧米では「スノーモンキー」とも呼ばれる。ベージュの厚い毛皮で覆われた体、白い腹、ピンクの顔で、オスの平均体長は 57 cm、体重は 11 kg である。メスは若干小さく、平均 52 cm、8 kg である。オス、メスともに、強い絆で結ばれた血縁関係のあるメスと、他のグループから入ってきた血縁関係のないオスで構成される 10 頭から 100 頭の群れで暮らす。絶滅の危機にさらされてはおらず、野生のものも多く存在する。そのため、数が増えすぎると、作物や樹木への被害を防ぐために間引きされることもある。
