アメリカ北部およびカナダに生息するハイイログマ (グリズリー) は、実際にはヒグマ (Ursus arctos horribilis) の亜種であり、混乱を避けるためにしばしばアメリカヒグマと呼ばれる。ハイイログマの特徴は、そのぶ厚い茶色の毛皮、肩の大きなこぶ、まっすぐな鼻、丸い耳である。長い爪のある前足がとても強力で、穴を掘ったり、獲物を捕まえるのに使用する。体が非常に大きくなるものもいるが、体のサイズにはかなりのばらつきがある。平均的なサイズは、オスが体重約 240 kg、体長 2.2 m、メスが体重 160 kg、体長 1.8 m である。
