アメリカドクトカゲ (Heloderma suspectum) はアメリカ合衆国南部とメキシコ北部の乾燥地域が原産の大型毒トカゲである。オレンジと黒の鱗が縞と網状の模様に配置されており、体長は 51～60 cm、体重は 350～700 g。アメリカドクトカゲは非常に鋭い嗅覚を持っている。狩りのときに活用し、口から舌を出し入れすることで空気の匂いをかぎ取っている姿がよく見られる。アメリカドクトカゲは非常にゆっくり動くため人間にとって真の脅威となることはないが、恐怖心から殺されてしまうことはよくあり、近危急種に指定されている。
