草原や熱帯雨林、乾燥した低木林に生息するココノオビアルマジロ (Dasypus novemcinctus) は、北米、中米、南米原産の、背中に固い装甲を備えた哺乳類の一種である。生息地域全体で 9 種の亜種が存在し、亜種間では外見上の差異が大きい。一般的にココノオビアルマジロは 9 本の帯に分かれたまだらなピンクグレーの装甲帯楯に覆われている。肩と腰は幅広の帯、胴体は幅狭の帯で覆われており、長い装甲状の尾を持つ。四肢は短く、足は大きい。前足に 4 本、後ろ足に 5 本の強い爪がある。顔は細長く、鼻口部はとがっていて、耳が大きい。頭胴長は 38 cm ～ 58 cm、尾の長さは 26 cm ～ 53 cm。装甲帯楯の最も高い位置までの高さは 15 cm ～ 25 cm。オス (5.5 kg ～ 7.7 kg) はメス (3.6 kg ～ 6 kg) より体重があるが、それ以外の性別間の差異はない。
