アルゼンチン、ブラジル、パラグアイ、ウルグアイの森林、草地、低木林に生息するタテガミオオカミ (Chrysocyon brachyurus) は、首の中央部から肩甲骨にかけて黒くて太いたてがみがあることから名づけられたイヌ科の動物である。手足が細長く、全体的にひょろっとした体格をしている。体は赤いボサボサの毛で覆われており、脚には短い黒い毛が生えている。オスもメスも、体の大きさも見た目もほとんど差異はなく、肩高 73 cm ～ 95 cmである。体長は 95 cm ～ 115 cm で、さらに尾の長さが 30 cm ～ 40 cm あり、体重は 20 kg ～ 29 kgである。
