ジャイアントパンダ (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) は中国中部の山岳地帯に生息するクマの一種である。体は特徴ある黒と白の毛皮で覆われており、脚や耳、目の周りが黒色をしている。ほとんど笹しか食べないため、豊かな竹林でしか生活できない。竹はエネルギーの低い食べ物であるため、生きていくためには大量に食べなくてはならず、起きている時間のほとんどを餌探しと食事に費やさなければならない。また、エネルギー摂取量の少なさから、生まれてくる子は、非常に小さく脆弱である。
