アカシカ (Cervus elaphus) は、ヨーロッパ、アジア、北アフリカの温帯の草原、森林、低木林に広く生息する有蹄類である。毛色は赤褐色で、腹部は淡い色をしている。大きく尖った耳、大きな目、長い鼻が特徴である。性的二形であり、オスはメスより体が大きく複数に枝分かれした大きな角がある。アカシカにはいくつかの亜種が存在し、地域や環境条件によって大きさが異なる。オスは体長 1.7 m ～ 2.5 m、肩高 1.07 m ～ 1.37 m に成長する。メスは体長 1.6 m ～ 2.1 m、肩高 0.95 m ～ 1.22 m である。オスはメスより体重があり、メスが 60 kg ～ 170 kg であるのに対し、オスは 90 kg ～ 240kg ある。
