シマスカンク (Mephitis mephitis) は、カナダ南部、アメリカ、メキシコ北部など北アメリカ全域に生息する小型哺乳類である。短い脚、太くふさふさした尾を持つずんぐりした動物である。細い顔には尖った鼻と小さな丸い耳が付いている。シマスカンクは、黒と白の厚く粗い毛に覆われており、その特徴的な模様からこの名前が付けられている。黒い毛で頭皮が白く、背中から尾にかけて2本の縞模様がある。オスは体長 38 cm ～ 46 cm で、33 cm ～ 41 cm の長い尾を持ち、体重は 2 kg ～ 5.5 kg ある。メスは若干小柄で、頭胴長 34 cm ～ 41 cm、尾の長さが 30 cm ～ 37 cm、体重 1.8 kg ～ 4.9 kg である。

Striped skunks do not hibernate, although those living in colder environments may enter a state of torpor during the winter in which they may lose up to 50% of their body weight.
The striped skunk can project foul-smelling liquid up to 3 metres, and the smell can linger for over 2 weeks.
