オオヤマネコ (Lynx lynx) は、ヨーロッパやアジアの温帯林や北欧の山地に生息する中型の猫である。幅が広くがっしりした体格と大きな足を持ち、短い尾と特徴的な耳をしている。毛色はクリーム色から褐色で、体全体に黒い斑点がある。尾の先端と耳のふさも黒い。オスとメスは外見上似ているが、オスの方が少し大きく、体重もかなりある。オスは体重 20 kg～ 45 kg、、頭胴長 98 cm～ 109 cm、肩高 60 cm～ 75 cm である。メスは体重 18 kg～ 25 kg、頭胴長 94 cm～ 106 cm、肩高 54 cm～ 68 cm である。ずんぐりした尾はオス、メスともに 11 cm～ 24 cm である。
