ウシガエルは、アメリカとカナダの沼地、池、湖に生息する大型の両生類である。環境に応じて、背中は濃い緑、淡い緑、淡い茶色と様々で、腹部は淡い色をしている。背中に暗色の斑点があったり、足に帯状の模様があったりするが、模様のないものも存在する。ウシガエルは性的二型で、メスはオスよりも大きく、オスは喉に特徴的な黄色い模様があり、頭部側面にある鼓膜（卵形聴覚腺）がかなり大きい。体長 90 ～ 152 mm、体重 300 ～ 500 gである。
