アメリカビーバーは、アメリカやカナダの温帯林や川沿いの地域に生息する大型のげっ歯類の一種である。アメリカビーバーの体は 2 種類の毛に覆われている。つまり、表面には長くて粗い上毛があり、その下に短くて柔らかい下毛がある。この毛のため、ビーバーの毛並みはザラザラして見える。毛の色は茶色、赤色、褐色で、小さな耳と目、突き出た黒い鼻、大きく目立つ前歯が特徴である。頭胴長は 74 ～ 90 cmで、尾の長さは 20 ～ 35 cm、体重は 11 ～ 32 kg である。
