ヘラジカの様々な亜種はノルウェー、スウェーデン、フィンランド、ロシア、エストニア、ラトビア、リトアニア、ポーランド、アメリカ、カナダに生息する。亜寒帯の落葉樹林に生息し、木や木質植物の若芽を主食とする。ヘラジカは大型のシカで、厚い茶色の毛皮に覆われ、首に特徴的なこぶがある。また長い吻端も特徴的である。アラスカヘラジカは最大の亜種で、オスは肩高 1.7 ～ 2.3 m、頭胴長 2.4 ～ 3.1 m、体重 380 ～700 kg と非常に大きい。成獣のオスには、大きなへらのように平たい角があり、時期によっては「ビロード」状の皮膚に覆われている場合がある。アラスカヘラジカの角は、1.4 ～ 1.8 m の長さがある。メスは身体の大きさは同程度であるが、体重がかなり軽く、200 ～ 490 kg で、角を持たない。
