ピューマは、カナダ、アメリカ、メキシコ、南米全域の森林、山岳、草原、砂漠、低木地帯に生息する大型のネコ科の動物である。一般的にアメリカライオンとも呼ばれる。砂色の毛、太い脚と太い尾、丸い耳と大きな頭、白い口元、目から下に延びる黒い涙の跡のような模様が特徴である。オスは、頭胴長 120 ～ 200 cm、肩高 60 ～ 90 cm、尾の長さ 63 ～ 95 cm、体重 53 ～ 100 kg である。メスは、頭胴長 90 ～ 180 cm、体重 29 ～ 64 kg で肩高や尾の長さはオスと同等である。
