カリフォルニアアシカは、アメリカ西部とメキシコの海岸地域に生息するアシカの一種である。体色は通常ダークブラウンで、側面や腹部は淡い色をしているが、メスの中には淡いブラウンの個体も存在する。幼い個体は外見が異なり、薄茶色のフワフワした産毛に覆われており、生後 5 ～ 7 か月で大人の毛に生え変わる。オスのカリフォルニアアシカは、体長 2.25 ～ 2.5 m、体重 250 ～ 350 kg。メスはかなり小さく、1.8 ～ 2.1 m、体重 80 ～ 100 kg である。
